All the rain makes my garden weeds grow like crazy
Written @ 12:58 a.m. on June 14, 2005

Tropical storm @rlene, where did you go? There was an angry red slash across my weather radar last night, spinning toward us giving off tornado warnings. But we didn't get anything. Not a thunderclap, not a lightening flash, no raindrops, not an overly strong gust of wind. Which made my lovely mind pose the intellectually stimulating question: Huh?... That was incredibly weird. There was no way we could have been missed by that monster. But we were. Crazy.

Today I finally got back to see my garden, and it was in shambles. A total massacre, I tell you. It has been raining constantly for weeks on end, and the weeks have overtaken almost everything. Morning glories have crawled over my corn, okra and the formerly bare spot where cucumbers should have been. So we had to spray some stuff that will kill my weeds and unfortunately also the okra. My corn should be fine, but I'll need to transplant the few stalks that are still growing to a different section and start again in the other four rows (my bell peppers, kohl rabi, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage are all fine and growing like the proverbial, ahem, weed..Grrrr). Speaking of my kohl rabi, I got to pick two that are ready today and we peeled and sliced them. My first veggies from my very own garden. I'm so proud. I'd never tasted it before, and I found it has a strong smell of cabbage when first cut, a slight taste of it and an aftertaste like green beans. It's not my favorite, but it's not bad.

I can't freakin' wait to start college classes again in the fall. I need learning. My brain is starting to feel neglected.
